Chakras are subtle energy centers that shape how you feel, act, and connect with life. There are 6 in-body chakras that run along the length of the spine and one at the crown of the head.
In spiritual growth, emphasis is often on expanding the upper chakras—the heart, throat, third eye, and crown. These upper power centers relate to our higher consciousness and the idea of “opening” into spiritual realms. Yet, to live our soul’s intentions in the world, the lower chakras become essential. True embodiment requires beginning at the foundation: The root, sacral, and solar plexus. These centers ground us in safety, trust, belonging, power, and self-worth. Without healing here, the journey to higher consciousness risks becoming ungrounded or fragmented.
When the lower chakras are neglected, we can feel disconnected, unsteady, or split between our body and our spiritual awareness.
Healing begins from the ground up.
In this episode, I share why the lower chakras are vital, how history and conditioning have shaped our relationship to them, and what it means to embody your power by returning to these foundational centers.
A Brief History of the Chakras
The chakra system originates in the ancient wisdom traditions of India, particularly within yoga, tantra, and Ayurveda. First mentioned in the Vedic scriptures between 700–500 BCE and later in the Upanishads, chakras were described as spinning energy centers aligned along the spine, where prana (life force) flows through subtle channels called nadis. In Sanskrit, chakra means “wheel” or “lotus,” pointing to their dynamic, living quality within the subtle body.
In the East, the chakras were never seen as isolated points, but as interdependent centers of consciousness. They reflected not only personal well-being but also our relationship with the world. Through meditation, mantra, breathwork, and movement, practitioners learned to harmonize body, mind, and spirit.
It wasn’t until the 20th century that chakras became widely known in the West. Ironically, the chakras were never initially associated with colors. Authors like Sir John Woodroffe (1919) and Charles Leadbeater (1927) introduced associations with color, and by the 1970s, the rainbow spectrum became mainstream in metaphysical circles. Western psychology also began linking chakras to emotional development and personal power, reframing them as maps for self-understanding and healing.
Today, many people engage with the chakra system not just as mystical symbolism but as a practical guide for living a whole, embodied life—bridging somatic healing, trauma integration, and spiritual development.
Why the Lower Chakras Matter
There is a term in spiritual growth work called “spiritual bypass”. From my experience teaching in this field, spiritual bypass means that we are disconnected from the power of the lower three chakras, and perhaps evading the wounds that are held there and needing to process.
The lower chakras—root, sacral, and solar plexus—are the foundation of our human experience. They carry so much of our early childhood conditioning in how we are going to bond, belong, attach, feel safe, relate to our emotions and feel a sense of self, or self-confidence. History is held, not in the mind, but in the lower three chakras. As mentioned previously, spiritual teachings often talk about concepts that are related to the upper chakras—love, compassion, intuition, and connection with spirit. Yet without anchoring these qualities into the lower body, we risk living “from the neck up”—stuck in the mind, spiritually aware, but not grounded in our humanity.
Each of the lower chakras has a vital role:
Root Chakra (Muladhara)
Located at the base of the spine, it governs survival, stability, and belonging. When out of balance, it can manifest as anxiety, deep subconscious fears or difficulty trusting life. When strong, it brings groundedness, presence, and confidence in our ability to exist safely in the world.
Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana)
In the pelvis, this center relates to creativity, intimacy, and emotional responsibility. Imbalance may show up as shame, blocked sexuality, or disconnection from pleasure. When balanced, it supports joy, playfulness, healthy relationships, and the authentic expression of emotions.
Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura)
Located in the upper abdomen, this is the seat of personal power, self-worth, and boundaries. An imbalance may appear as people-pleasing, indecision, or lack of confidence. A balanced solar plexus fuels empowerment, resilience, and the courage to live with integrity.
When these three chakras are weak or wounded, we may feel anxious, powerless, or unsure of our place in the world. But when they are nurtured, they form the strong ground from which higher consciousness can truly flourish. Healing the lower chakras ensures that spiritual awakening is not abstract or escapist—it becomes embodied, lived, and integrated.
Healing the Split Between Upper and Lower
Many people experience a split: living in the head or in the spiritual upper chakras while feeling ungrounded in the body. This often looks like having profound spiritual insights but struggling with relationships, finances, or health. Modern culture has conditioned us to value intellect, reason, productivity, and transcendence—functions of the upper chakras—while suppressing or even shaming the instinctual wisdom of the lower body.
Over generations, this has created a collective pattern: brilliant minds and open hearts that aren’t fully anchored in the body. Living “from the neck up” or even “the heart up” can lead to floating, disconnection, or even burnout. Embodied spirituality asks us to bring consciousness downward, into the places that hold fear, trauma, or shame. This is where healing becomes truly transformational—when we no longer escape into spirit but integrate spirit into the body.
Healing the lower chakras is about bridging this divide. It means:
- Releasing inherited beliefs that disconnect you from your body
- Restoring a sense of safety and belonging in the root
- Reclaiming emotional flow and creativity in the sacral
- Owning your personal power in the solar plexus
When we do this work, spirituality becomes practical: how we love, how we work, how we show up every day. And as we do it individually, we also contribute to the collective healing of how humanity relates to power, belonging, and embodied presence.
Practices to Support Lower Chakra Healing
Healing the lower chakras is both simple and profound. Small, consistent practices help rewire safety, creativity, and empowerment into the nervous system. Here are a few ways to begin reconnecting with your root, sacral, and solar plexus:
Grounding Practices
The root chakra thrives on connection with the earth. Walk barefoot in the grass, garden with your hands in the soil, or rest with a weighted blanket to remind your body it is safe. You can also eat grounding foods like root vegetables or visualize roots extending from your body deep into the earth. Each act affirms: I am safe here in my body and on this earth.
Breathwork
The sacral chakra benefits from slow, conscious breathing in the belly and pelvis. Try a 4-4-8 breath—inhale for four counts, hold for four, and exhale for eight. This calms the nervous system and opens the flow of energy in the lower body. Pelvic breathing in particular reconnects you with vitality, sensuality, and creative power.
Creative Expression
Engaging in play and creativity unblocks the sacral chakra and restores joy. Dance, paint, sing, write, or move your body freely without judgment. The act of creating is healing in itself, reminding you that you are a channel of life force and emotional flow.
Empowerment Work
The solar plexus grows stronger through self-assertion and healthy boundaries. Journal affirmations, practice saying “no” without apology, or take small but meaningful actions that affirm your worth. Each step tells your body: I am worthy. My choices matter.
These practices are not about perfection but about presence. By tending to your lower chakras daily, you create a strong foundation that can support all higher growth.
Coming Home to Your Power
Healing your lower chakras is not about dismissing the upper centers but about integration—bringing your spirituality all the way down into your body. True awakening is an invitation to come home: to safety in your body, to belonging in your relationships, and to empowerment in your choices.
When these foundational centers are restored and nourished, you feel grounded yet expansive, strong yet compassionate. Your spiritual awareness becomes embodied truth rather than an abstract concept. Spiritual maturity is not measured by how high you can reach into mystical states, but by how deeply you can root that awareness into your everyday life. The more integrated your foundation, the more gracefully your higher chakras open. You don’t just touch light—you embody it.
Your body is ready. Your energy is ready. The path home begins now.
